Bassnectar is a North American project by Lorin Ashton that infuses breakbeats, hip hop, electronica, metal, rock, and jazz into his music. Lorin Ashton is one man show as he is a musician, DJ, and producer. Bassnectar first began in San Francisco but now travels all over the United States, playing at 150 shows a year. The settings of his shows can be in a theater, festival, club, bar, warehouse, or anywhere else his followers can head bang/mosh/jam to. Pictures of his concerts reveal a psychedelic scene with many varieties of people. He uses electronics and heavy tempos to exaggerate his songs and also has many collaborators which help him create his music. Lorin Ashton said he was most influenced by Metallica and Nirvana. Although he sounds nothing like these two bands he stated that the energy from It Smells Like Teen Spirit influenced him greatly. Bassnectar currently has released 6 albums (full discography found here) since 2001. His most recent album was released in 2007 and it was entitled Underground Communication. He has been through two different record labels, Om Records and Organic Music. He has played with names such as Buckethead, STS9, and Michael Kang. He is still currently touring with his schedule for 2009 not yet announced.
